Vectors Vectors arithmetic appears in most areas of physics study, and vector skills are essential for solving mechanical problems. Yet they are difficult to master. Now you can help students improve their grasp of basic vector concepts with Vectors, a hyperlink tutorial that is ideal for any high school or introductory-level physics course. The Vectors tutorial capitalises on its hypertext environment to let students work at their own speed and comfort level as they move through the material. The program begins with the definition of vectors and moves on to explain related concepts and operations. A unique feature lets students practice vector addition and subtraction graphically, which helps them explore different properties from a visual perspective. They can actually "see" the vector operations and move the vectors into place with the mouse. Simulations and exercises are also included. Students are presented with a scenario and asked to give their best estimate of the resultant vector. The tutorial then gives the exact answer and grades the student's effort. This interaction quickly assumes a game-like quality as students strive to improve their estimation skills. In addition to vector fundamentals and operation exercises, Vectors includes an appendix that can be used as a handy reference for brushing up on concepts that might need further explanation or refreshing. An index lets students jump to a desired topic with a simple click of the mouse, and a detailed map gives an overview of where they have been in the tutorial and what portions have yet to be covered. Finally, a "report card" is available upon exiting that shows how well students have answered the problems and questions. This self-directed tutorial gives your students a good vector workout!
